Look over my shoulder as I show you how easy it is to quickly create perfectly siloed site architecture in less that one minute. Siloing or website silo architecture is a vital layer of SEO, it’s the foundation of both a solid thematic site whereby each topic is housed and served on pages related to the central message.

So, in other words, you only see categories if you have clicked into the topic (a.k.a. silo) and you will only see related supporting articles for that category if you have click on the category. This accomplishes two things 1) it creates an optimal user experience for those on your website while 2) creating a logical hierarchy for search engines spiders to index and rank your content.

Another benefit to siloing is that the supporting articles and their topics rank easily (since they are long-tail keywords) and they also contribute ranking factor to the more competitive traffic-bearing categories and primary silo keywords.

In either case, this is one vital on page SEO strategy that you can now implement with the SEO Design Framework without coding, clunky plugins or having to manually code links by hand.

As I see it in your guide, the content is written before the silo is created.
Is it possible to add content later on, like new posts in the same category?
If I have a category only blog, with out pages, will the silo technique apply to such a set up?

    Hi Govertz:

Better to start a new silo as typical category / post formats only go two tiers deep and the disadvantage is, once a post rolls off the page the weight of the page is lost for rankings. By using the silo builder, it creates a page-child page > category and then post format.

So, in order for us to create the proper silo structure, we had completely rewrote WordPress’s taxonomy, so, you have up to 4 tiers to leverage themed content Home > Silo > Category > Supporting Article.

If you start a silo with the silo builder, you can always go back and add either more categories or supporting articles.

We do have an alternative inside SEO Ultimate where you can only show posts from the same category once you are inside one, I will send you a link offline.

    Best,

    • First of all, thank you for commenting.

In our experience, we’ve created and seen hundreds of sites built with proper site architecture create rankings for hundreds of keywords (without backlinks). So, I’m not sure of your experience or how you built the silos, but, there is a method to it that works marvelously.
